Ryan is a climate scientist with over 15 years of experience teaching and conducting high-level scientific research in the Pacific, focusing on climate monitoring and mapping as well as data and information dissemination. He possesses a deep understanding of climate finance and project proposal development and has earned numerous grants to support climate adaptation work in the Pacific.

Ryan grew up in New Jersey but has lived in Hawaiʻi for over 26 years. He completed both his MA and PhD degrees in the Department of Geography at UH Mānoa with a focus on climate science. He has worked as a lecturer within the University of Hawai‘i system, teaching numerous classes on climate, water resources, and the natural environment

His research includes a wide range of projects related to climate mapping and attribution of observed change. Currently, he is co-lead on the development of the Hawai‘i Climate Data Portal and the Pacific Drought Knowledge Exchange. He is also an Associate Climatologist at the Water Resources Research Center, and graduate faculty in the Department of Pacific Island Studies at the UH Mānoa.

Ryan has a deep love for nature and a sincere desire to preserve the natural world. While he is passionate about the work, he says what truly defines him is fatherhood. He has two sons, ages 9 and 11.

Ryan has extensive experience working in the field of climate finance and has assisted in the development and delivery of a specialized project preparation training course that has been delivered to hundreds of young professionals from across the Indo-Pacific. He has earned numerous grants to support climate adaptation work around the world.
