Research Priorities at PI-CASC
Pacific Island communities are experiencing unprecedented rates of change, in climate, in the formation of invasive biological communities, and in the risk of novel climate impacts likely to occur disproportionately in these regions. To meet these challenges, resource managers need relatable and usable information, and science that is applicable and actionable, derived from collaborative efforts between scientists and resource managers.
PI-CASC works to bring university, government, and community networks together to conduct research on climate adaptation challenges identified jointly. Through our collaborative partnerships with research and stakeholder networks across this region at local, state, national, and international levels, PI-CASC has the place-based context necessary to address the climate needs of local and regional Pacific Island populations while growing their adaptive capacities.
Five-Year Science Agenda Themes
For each host agreement between the USGS and the PI-CASC University Consortium, the federal director develops a Five-year Science Agenda by convening stakeholder and science advisor groups to establish statements of need for the region. The most recent agenda established the research priorities for our current agreement based on the needs identified by these groups and our partners as “low hanging fruit” for the consortium to address through prioritized funding and synergistic opportunities.
