Title:
Bridging the Gap: Boundary Organizations, Climate Change, and Invasive Species Management
Webinar Description:
Invasive species and climate change are two of the most pressing threats to ecosystems in Hawaiʻi and the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands, a region that shares many management challenges and priorities with other parts of North America. A recent cross-RISCC publication analyzes regional surveys of natural resource managers on how boundary organizations like the RISCC networks help bridge the gap between climate research and management practices. We highlight shared management priorities, barriers to climate-informed invasive species work, and the types of climate information practitioners find most useful in their work. Insights emphasize the power of regional collaboration, co-production, and peer learning to support effective, climate-smart invasive species management across both island and continental contexts.
Speaker details:
Dr. Laura Brewington co-directs the Pacific Research on Island Solutions for Adaptation (Pacific RISA) program, which is the NOAA Climate Adaptation Partnership team for the US Pacific Islands. She designs and conducts collaborative, policy-oriented research using spatial analytical tools to support climate adaptation in the Pacific Islands. She is a Research Professor at Arizona State University where her work focuses on climate adaptation, biosecurity, and natural resources management. She earned her Ph.D. in geography from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill based on research in agriculture, invasive species, and conservation in the Galapagos Islands.
